Control V-Carving Depth When the Stock Is Not Flat

V-carving converts small Z changes into visible width changes, so warped stock can distort lettering even when the toolpath is correct. Establish the reference plane, map or flatten the surface where supported, and test fine strokes at the real depth.

Map Surface Height Before V-Carving

With an angled cutter, line width is a direct clue to local depth. Mark a set of equal strokes across the real work area and measure their widths before changing the artwork. If identical strokes widen and narrow with position, the problem belongs to surface height, workholding, or compensation rather than the font file.

Choose a Z Reference That Matches the Feature

Determine whether the stock is bowed, twisted, thickness-varied, or simply not parallel to machine travel. Check the support and clamping state as well as the face. A probe map can only compensate the surface it actually measured; movement after probing invalidates the relationship.

Relate Cutter Angle to Width Sensitivity

Choose a control method that matches the job. Surfacing may suit sacrificial stock, physical flattening may suit a fixture, and supported height mapping may suit an uneven but stable surface. Do not use deeper carving as a blanket correction because it changes stroke width and corner detail everywhere.

Prepare the Stock Before Editing the Artwork

Build the test from the narrowest strokes, smallest counters, and shallowest intended details in the actual design. Include positions near the high and low areas. A broad decorative letter can look acceptable while punctuation or a fine serif disappears at the same Z variation.

Cut a Lettering Depth Ladder

Apply the real finish before release. Sanding, paint fill, sealing, or cleaning can widen lines, close counters, and erase shallow features. Inspect at final viewing distance and under the expected light, then record the minimum surviving stroke and the local height range represented by the sample.

Release the Board and File as One Setup

Archive surface preparation, mapping or reference method, cutter included angle, tip condition, target depth, measured line widths, and finished sample. A new board or clamp pattern needs a fresh height check. Compensation data should never be assumed valid after the stock is removed and reloaded.
